Hearst Castle is open for tours daily, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. The tour duration does not include the bus ride to the Castle. Please allow one hour between tours.


The Castle - Originally nicknamed "Camp Hill," its wilderness offered a place for family members and friends to "rough it" on camping trips.

Important Information:

Hearst Castle accepts VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. Free day use parking is available for automobiles, motorcycles, tour buses and recreational vehicles.

  • No Food, Chewing Gum, or Beverages other than Bottled Water
  • No Smoking
  • No Large Bags or Backpacks. All bags are subject to inspection
  • No Strollers
  • No Pets
  • No Flash Photography inside any structures
  • No touching or handling of artifacts, artwork, or statuary
  • Please remain on the tour route and with your guide while on guided tours
  • No swimming, wading, or body contact with the water in pools or fountains
  • Getting There:

    Hearst Castle is located on California Hwy 1, about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Driving time from either city is approximately six hours. From Los Angeles, take Hwy 101 north to San Luis Obispo, then Hwy 1 north about 40 miles. From San Francisco, take Hwy 101 south to Hwy 46 west, then take Hwy 1 north about 13 miles.
